Optimizing the Children’s Hospitals Graduate Medical Education Payment Program (CHGME) at a Time of Pediatric Workforce Challenges and Health Need
As child health needs have evolved, there remain serious shortages and maldistribution of the pediatric workforce (1). These shortages render children, particularly those in rural areas, vulnerable to inadequate access to both general pediatric clinicians and especially subspecialists. (2). Although some family medicine physicians also see children, the vast majority of children in the U.S. are seen by primary care and subspecialty pediatricians (3, 4).
