Dr Wilhelmi addresses the higher false positive rate of smooth muscle antibodies (SMA) or anti-actin antibodies (AAA) that was observed in our original article in comparison with other adult studies. (2, 3) Specifically, he discusses the higher specificity of indirect immunofluorescence (IFA) technique to detect SMA in comparison with enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect AAA in lieu of SMA, in autoimmune hepatitis type 1 (AIH-1) which could explain our finding of relatively higher false positive rate.
