Bifidobacterium infantis, necrotizing enterocolitis, death, and the role of parents in the NICU
From the first cohort study showing a significant decrease in necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) with routine administration of probiotic dietary supplements more than 20 years ago,1 there has been guarded optimism that altering the intestinal microbiome through feeding of mother’s milk, antibiotic stewardship and administration of probiotic microbes would decrease or profoundly curtail the incidence of both NEC and late onset sepsis. The most recent Cochrane Database systematic review2 included 56 randomized or quasi-randomized trials in which 10,812 infants participated.
