Recall Redux – Rocking Sleepers

In April 2019, Fisher-Price and the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of 4.7 million Rock ’n Play Sleepers after reports of 30 infant deaths allegedly related to the product. At the same time, Kids2 recalled nearly 700,000 of their reclining rocking sleepers after 15 infant deaths were reported.

The recall was apparently ineffective because the companies and the CPSC were compelled to reissue their warnings last month:

Today the CPSC is reannouncing two recalls of inclined infant sleepers that were issued nearly  four years ago – the Fisher Price Rock n Play and the Kids2 Rocking Sleeper. We are issuing  this announcement because, despite their removal from the marketplace and a prohibition on  their sale, babies continue to die in these products. We now know of approximately 100 infant  deaths in the Rock n Play, including eight that happened after the recall was announced. And  we know of 15 infants who died in the Kids2 Rocking Sleeper, including four since the  announcement of the recall.

After additional Fisher-Price devices were recalled in 2021, Congress eventually passed the Safe Sleep for Babies Act banning the sale of inclined infant sleep products.

CPSC Chair Alexander Hoehn-Saric issued a statement saying that unsafe infant sleep products “are still in too many homes, and babies continue to be put at risk.”

I urge all parents, grandparents, and caregivers to follow the guidance of this announcement  and stop using these products immediately. Also, it is illegal to sell or distribute recalled  consumer products, including on the resale market. I urge all stores, including online  marketplaces, to review the products being donated or listed and stop all recalled products from  being sold.

Let’s take a moment to review the ABCs of Safe Sleep:

A = ALONE. (Not with other people, pillows, blankets, or stuffed animals.)

B = on my BACK. (Not on the stomach or side.)

C = in my CRIB. (Not on an adult bed, sofa, cushion, or other soft surface.)

And never put a baby to sleep in an inclined infant sleeping product like a Rock ’n Play, as we pointed out in 2021:

Inclined sleeper products and other devices just aren’t necessary and never have been. Most babies who are put to sleep alone, on their back, in a crib only with a fitted mattress sheet and nothing else will figure out how to fall asleep and, eventually, how to stay asleep just fine. Parents are advised to return infant sleeper products given to them by doting friends and relatives or as a baby shower gift in exchange for something useful (like some t-shirts, burp cloths, or a downpayment on a college savings account).
