107,622: Another Grim Milestone

Image
Yesterday on The PediaBlog , we came to grips with one million COVID deaths in the most technologically developed nation on the planet. But the United States also surpassed another grim milestone recently: Over one million Americans have died in this century from drug overdoses. Last year was the worst year ever for overdose deaths in the U.S. Meryl Kornfield blames the pandemic for exacerbating a growing trend: More than 100,000 Americans died of drug overdoses in 2021, up 15 percent from the previous year, according to an estimatereleased by the National Center for Health Statistics. The tally of 107,622 reflects challenges exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic: lost access to treatment, social isolation and a more potent drug supply. Since the start of the 21st century, an overdose epidemic led by prescription pain pills and followed by waves of heroin, fentanyl and meth has killed more than 1 million people, or roughly the population of San Jose, according to the p...

Post-streptococcal Myalgia and Protracted Febrile Myalgia syndrome – similar yet different

We compare cases of familial Mediterranean fever-related Protracted Febrile Myalgia (PFMS) and Post-Streptococcal Myalgia (PSM), both rare disorders presenting with fever, myalgia, and inflammatory biomarkers. Although clinical symptoms may be undistinguishable, steroids are usually required in PFMS and PSM most often respond to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Awareness of PSM and preceding history may prevent unnecessary tests or overtreatment. source https://www.jpeds.com/article/S0022-3476(22)00428-0/fulltext?rss=yes

The United States will reach the grim milestone of one million deaths from COVID-19 any day now, according to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center which The PediaBlog has relied on for credible statistics throughout the pandemic. Globally, more than 6.2 million people have died from the infection in the 30 months since the first case of SARS-CoV-2 was identified in Wuhan, China. Tina Reed and colleagues at Axios put the scale and speed of such terrible loss in perspective: • On March 28, 2020, two weeks after the World Health Organization declared coronavirus a global pandemic and the President of the United States declared COVID-19 a national public health emergency, 2,974 Americans were dead from COVID-19 — equal to the number who perished as a result of the September 11 terrorist attacks. • Three weeks later, on April 16, 2020, there were 36,914 dead, equal to the number of American soldiers killed during the Korean War. In 10 more days, the number dead equal...

Cool Video Of The Week

Velocity from Madebyvadim on Vimeo : “A colourful journey though uncharted cosmos” was the slogan and driving force behind this new short film. Idea of creating this film came from observed similarity between glittery ink and cosmos. During the last two films I couldn’t shake the feeling that sparkling glitter with dark ink backgrounds on one hand and colourful pigments on the other reminded me of a distant galaxies, galactic clouds, nebulas and other cosmic bodies. Vast space of the universe, close ups of “fast moving” near galactic bodies as well as explosions of stars, – all that I’ve tried to portray in a new experimental film.     source http://www.thepediablog.com/2022/05/14/cool-video-of-the-week-506/
