Grand Rounds Hyperbilirubinemia Following Phototherapy In Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficient Neonates: Not Out Of The Woods

G6PD deficiency is a common cause of hazardous neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (HB) leading to the potentially devastating sequel of Kernicterus Spectrum Disorder (KSD), both in the US and worldwide (1,2,3). G6PD deficient newborns may be discharged as healthy from birth hospitalization, but subsequently develop a sudden and exponential increase in serum bilirubin to neurotoxic concentrations. A trigger of hemolysis may sometimes, but not always, be identified. Some G6PD deficient newborns readmitted for HB had been treated with phototherapy during their birth hospitalization, their HB having apparently resolved prior to discharge. source https://www.jpeds.com/article/S0022-3476(23)00300-1/fulltext?rss=yes

Out Of The Old Black Bag

OUT OF THE OLD BLACK BAG   The Legend of Willis Reed — Part 2 By  Anthony L. Kovatch, M.D.   When New York Knickerbockers basketball star Willis Reed passed away on March 21, 2023, it jolted my memory into reliving an event that inspired me for over 50 years and provided a tale of courage that I would reveal to my patients and their parents over 45 years of medical practice. I have fondly called the revelation “The Legend of Willis Reed.”  The game was played on May 8, 1970 at the “new” Madison Square Garden in New York City. I have no recollection of where I was watching the game on television. I must narrate the legend in my own words as I have for 45 years… to anyone who will listen. *        *        *        * It was Game 7 of the NBA Finals and the series was tied at 3 games apiece. NBA icon Jerry West’s full-court shot for the favored Los Angeles Lakers (who had towering superstar Wilt...

OUT OF THE OLD BLACK BAG   The Legend of Willis Reed — Part 1 By  Anthony L. Kovatch, M.D.   Musical Accompaniment: “Basketball” by Kurtis Blow.   “ Or when Willis Reed stood so tall Playing D with desire, it’s Basketball”   It is said that winter must be cold for those with no warm memories. On May 8, 1970 an event occurred that I would not only privately remember, but would report upon for the next 53 years. It has come time to share it with The PediaBlog  on its anniversary! On July 20, 1969, members of the human race for the first time landed on the moon and took “one giant step for mankind.” But one month earlier, those of us with whom I had graduated from high school had already become official members of a “generation lost in space.” Over the next year my baby-boomer generation of confused, highly-vulnerable individuals transitioned into adulthood, buckling under the heavy weight of historical events beyond our control: the r...
